“Date Night”, directed by Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”), is the story of a suburban couple, played by Tina Fey and Steve Carell who are in search of renewing a marriage that has turned them more into roommates than lovers as routines have turned into chasing after overactive children and balancing boring careers with everyday tasks.
Fey and Carell have great chemistry on screen as Claire and Phil Foster, a real estate agent and an accountant with two kids living in a New Jersey suburb. Throughout the movie, the pair feeds off of each other to provide laugh after laugh with everything from creating dialogue for strangers at dinner tables in restaurants to addressing Phil’s insecurities in the presence of a shirtless Mark Wahlberg who’s pecs seem to capture Claire’s attention a little more than Phil would like.

After learning of a friend’s divorce, Phil decides to make their next date night different than their ordinary date night in an attempt to avoid a similar fate. The couple gets dressed up and heads to Manhattan to get a table at a chic new restaurant. After an unsuccessful attempt to secure a reservation, the couple hijacks someone else’s reservation by assuming their identity and end up getting pulled into a night of car chases and dodging bullets.
Though parts of the plot, such as an accountant outwitting organized criminals and crooked politicians in order to save the day, are a bit far-fetched, the movie is full of laughs for those looking to escape reality for a couple of hours.
The movie has a great theme for those of us in relationships: change it up or it can get boring as you take on more responsibilities together. Although the movie has many hilarious scenes in it and is generally worth seeing, I think that a bit more room outside the script for impromptu humor, would definitely launch “Date Night” to the level of this year’s “Hangover”.
