Wrestling round-up: Panthers takes 4th at the West Hills Tournament
Nearing the end of the first month of wrestling, the Panthers came out of the West Hills Tournament Sept. 21 with a fourth place finish.
Coach David Pacheco was optimistic when commenting on the season so far.
“After this weekend we’ve seen every team except Palomar College., which is a good thing,” said Pacheco. “We get a better idea of how we fit and where we fit in at. We had some guys who were dinged up and didn’t wrestle, so the fact that we finished fourth gives us some promise to climb the ladder.”
The team passed Chabot and Bakersfield in the California Community College Wrestling standings, two teams that were sitting ahead of City College before the West Hills Tournament.
Sophomore Abel Garcia had a second place finish in the 174-pound weight class after his first loss of the year came in the finals against Fresno City College.
Garcia has had a strong start to the season, and Pacheco said he’s happy with the growth he has seen in Garcia both on and off the mats.
“Abel is a really good wrestler, and we got him because his high school grades weren’t what they should have been,” said Pacheco. “But he’s really turned that around. I mean, he’s not just doing well wrestling, where he took second in state for us last year, but his GPA is somewhere around a 3.45 after two semesters and summer school. So he’s really, really stepped it up in everything.”
Garcia is also growing into a leadership role this year, said Pacheco.
“He’s kind of a quiet leader this year. Last year he was quiet. This year he’s doing other things that show leadership whether it’s mopping mats or leading drills, which is really important, because when you go on to the next level, they are going to want to know about that, so I see that in him, and it’s a good thing—a really good thing,” Pacheco said.
Another notable performance at the West HIlls Tournament came from freshman Conrad Trevino who took third place in the 165 weight class, after defeating a Fresno City wrestler who beat him twice in the week before at the KLS Air Invitational.

“It shows that in just that one week, he’s improved already, so that’s a good thing,” said Pacheco.
Freshman Michael Mello also had a standout performance, pinning the No. 1 seed wrestler in the quarter finals in the 149 class.
“Getting the win over the No. 1 seed was big,” said Pacheco.
Injuries have plagued City College wrestling so far this year, and Pacheco said he hopes to see the team get healthy before the conference matches begin.
“We’re still dinged up. We left 10 guys at home this past week because of injuries,” said Pacheco. “That’s a full team, so it was big. We gotta get healthy.”
Going into the Santa Ana Tournament Sept. 29, while Pacheco wants to see the team get healthy, he also wants to see his wrestlers get time on the mats.
“This week is to get as many guys matches, then we get a week of rest,” said Pacheco.
The team looks to defend their seven consecutive conference champion titles when conference play starts Oct. 17 at Lassen College.
