City College hosted a panel discussion April 19 where public speakers from different countries discussed food sovereignty and farmers’ rights.
The International Studies program invited speakers Buddhi Chaudhary of Nepal, Sam Oerun Ke of Cambodia and Nirina Fenoarifara Randriambololona of Madagascar to the Cultural Awareness Center to give a brief description of their home country’s agriculture and to talk about companies that produce goods there.
The speakers talked about agriculture, food and food sovereignty. The term food sovereignty refers to the public’s right to healthy, eco-friendly food produced locally in safe ways that protect agriculture systems, according to a handout given during the event.

“The goal for having these speakers today is to enlighten students and faculty and staff about global food and environmental issues,” said City College professor Riad Bahhur, “and also to kind of make the connection between what’s happening in other places in the world and in Sacramento and California.”
The speakers talked about how big companies affect the farming industry by the treatment of rural farmers and how they’re continually exploiting land used by local farmers. Other topics included the issues of child labor and big business.
The speakers also answered questions from attendees.
