City College baseball wins first game of the season
The City College Panthers won the first of a two-game series 3-1 against the Fresno City Rams Jan. 30 at Union Stadium.
The score was a steady 0-0 until Fresno brought in a run at the top of the fifth inning. In the first at-bat of the inning, Fresno’s third baseman Joe Garabedian hit a double to left center. Later, center fielder Daniel Gardner singled to shortstop bringing in Garabedian for a run.
The Panthers failed to score until the bottom of the sixth inning when first baseman Brandon Langan singled to right field bringing in left fielder Alex Muzzi for a run.
The top of the seventh inning ended with Fresno’s Garabedian being picked off by Panthers’ second baseman Boston Romero. The Rams ended the top of the seventh inning with no runs, one hit and no errors.
The game remained at 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh when Panthers shortstop Drake Atlee homered to left field, ending the inning with a 2-1 score.
“We had a rough start, but we turned the page,” said Atlee. “I got back out there, got a good pitch and made it happen.”
Fresno failed to make any runs in the top of the eighth, ending the inning with no runs, hits or errors.

The bottom of the eighth started off with City College’s third baseman Tyler Houlihan singling out to left field, then advancing to second base after Langan singled out to center field. Romero doubled on a line drive to first base, and brought in Houlihan for a run.
Right fielder Daniel Golden and designated hitter Riley Simmons both struck out followed by Atlee walking. Austin Spainhour then bunted, advancing Atlee to second and Romero to third. Langan was tagged out at home plate, ending the bottom of the eighth inning at 3-1.
Fresno ended the game at the top of the ninth inning with no runs, one hit and no errors.
“It was a good first effort,” said head coach Derek Sullivan. “The first game is nev
er a make or break deal. It was more for the guys to come out here and shake their butterflies.”
Although the City College Panthers won the first game of the season, there’s a lot of room for improvement, according to Sullivan.
“We need to improve offensively,” said Sullivan. “We struck out a lot. We need to get more balls out there.”
