With City College’s men’s basketball season underway, the team looks to improve on its performance from the 2013-2014 campaign.
The Panthers’ season started in early November with non-conference play as well as some tournaments. Big-8 Conference game are scheduled to start in early January, and the season will wrap up with the playoffs in late February.
Last year, the City College men’s basketball team ended the season by almost making the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs with a 14-14 — 7-7 in conference play — record. Now, even with some of its top players from last season gone, the Panthers team aims to be as competitive as it was last year, according to head coach Andrew Jones.
“A realistic goal for us is, last year we were 14-14, if we can match that again, I think that would be a successful season, given that we lost six of our top seven players from last year,” said Jones.
Panthers have only four players returning form last year’s roster — forwards Adam Ciszewski and Oleg Yemchuk and guards Derek Rhodes and Michael Wiggins. Of the other nine players on the 13-man roster, eight of them are freshmen.
Ciszewski says he believes that once the players come together as one, they can be competitive in their league and win some games.
“I think we have a lot of pieces, but we’ve just got to get used to one another,” said Ciszewski. “We’ve got people who can score and once we gel, we’ll be all right.”
According to Jones, Cisweski and Yemchuk are two of the surprises on the young team because of the spark they provide off the bench.

“[Ciszewski] has come back as a much more confident shooter, so we have been encouraging him to shoot the ball because he’s a really good shooter when the ball is kicked out to him,” said Jones.
“Coming into the season, I didn’t expect [Yemchuk] to rebound as well as he has. He’s just been a pleasant surprise in the post coming off of the bench,” said Jones.
So far, the Panthers (4-4) have played 8 games this season. The leading scorers per game have been Rhodes (9.4 ppg) and freshman forward Brandon Rowden (9.1 ppg). The leaders in rebounds and assists per game have been freshman forward Arnie Vargas (6 rebounds) and freshman guard Kellen Hill (3.7 assists), respectively.
In addition to being young, the team is also small. The tallest player on the team is sophomore guard Gino Alberts at 6-foot-5. However, what the team lacks in inexperience, they make up for in will power and determination, Yemchuk says.
“We just want to prove to people that we’re better than a lot of people may think we are,” said Yemchuk.
“Just because we lost some players from last year, [other teams] think that we’re not going to do as much this year, but we have a very different state of mind,” said Yemchuk. “We believe in ourselves, and we know that we are hard workers, and with the right mentality we can go pretty far.”
