In the last year, I have heard about ZuhG over and over again. I’ve always seen the ZuhG van parked outside their house, around the corner from City College too. Yet, I had never ventured to the store in the Downtown Plaza and I had never got the chance to see them live.
So, when I saw that they were having a kickoff party for the For the Love of Music tour with Musical Charis, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to see what all the talk was about. Both bands played at Harlows on Saturday night and the venue was full of dreadlocks and face paint.
I arrived there just in time to catch the last half of Musical Charis’ set and several of the members from ZuhG were on stage with them. Blake Abbey, lead singer of Musical Charis, admitted to the crowd that he had never heard of or practiced with ZuhG before they started collaborating.
“We knew that we liked them,” Abbey said with a laugh. “And it works.”
Although Musical Charis and ZuhG had only played together for a short amount of time, their chemistry was felt throughout the crowd. The audience was dancing freely and singing along to every word of the songs. Looking around, you could feel the love of music.
To add a little something different, live artist Stephanie Van Alen was in the crowd, painting canvases and faces. That’s right, she was offering up face paint to anyone who wanted it, including many of the band members.

Before Musical Charis ended the set, the members all sang happy birthday to members of their crew who were celebrating birthdays that night and in the near future. This public display of affection shows how close they really are, on and off stage.
When ZuhG took the stage, the crowd did not lose any steam. The dancing not only continued but got even heavier when the bongo drummers started walking around the crowd. Feeling a little left out, saxophone player Bot got on the floor and beat-boxer Charleee even participated in a dance competition with audience members.
The music went from jam to reggae to rock and hip hop, all so smooth you couldn’t decipher the transitions. This just goes to show how connected and talented the band members are.
They ended the set full of sweat and smiles, showing how much energy they put into their music. After the set, the members were found peppered in the audience, around the paintings, the bar and their merchandise booth.
Vocalist Jesi Naomi, who also heads up Jesi Naomi and the Trippers, hugged every person who came up to her, friend or fan. They hung out with their friends and talked to everyone about how excited they were for their upcoming tour.
Leaving the venue, I knew I made the right choice to finally see ZuhG Life and I felt inspired. Now all I have left to do is check out the store.
