The City College Associated Student Government will become two groups in November — the Student Associated Council and the Student Senate — under a new constitution that complies with policies and regulations that the Los Rios Community College District has reconfigured over the last 18 months.
“A campus-wide election approved the proposal for ASG to become SAC last April,” according to Kimberlee Beyrer, City College’s Faculty Coordinator, Student Leadership and Development
The district would like more conformity within all LRCCD campuses, according to ASG Vice President EloHim Cofield. The new constitution is part of that conformity. However, each campus still retains an individualized constitution that reflects the campus population.
According to Cofield, the LRCCD asked ASG to change its name to SAC because they are not a governing body, as the name Associated Student Government implies.
“ASG will be transforming to SAC in November when we split into two groups,” said ASG Public Relations Officer Emma Snuggs. “Then we’ll split into two groups SAC and the Student Senate. We are definitely working together to get more things accomplished.”
There are a few SAC policies and regulations that will be different from ASG, said Snuggs, such as the judicial aspects of how the Student Senate is ran. It will be more difficult to be removed from the senate once appointed. Senators will serve as the judge and jury of the Student Council and will focus more on politics.
The other body of SAC, the Clubs and Events Board, will be replacing the Inter-Club Council, according to Cofield. ICC was set up to have the clubs commissioner represent the clubs and make decisions on their behalf.

“SAC will be the official organization that represents all [City College] students,” said Beyrer. “Its presiding bodies include the Clubs and Events Board.”
The Clubs and Events Board will have primary responsibility for promoting student activities via clubs and campus-wide events, said Beyrer.
“Club members and the student body will now have the chance to be more directly involved with the decision-making processes, said Cofield. “This will help ensure the student body’s concerns are being addressed.”
Elections for SAC are in October. Petitions to run in the elections need to be turned in by Sept. 27.
According to Beyrer, students are encouraged to get involved in SAC. Students can do this by running for a position within the SAC organization, voting in the election, and attending the candidate forum.
Elections packets can be picked up and returned to the Student Leadership and Development office in room 226 of the South Gym. A candidate’s forum will be held Oct. 13 on the Quad, and the election itself will take place Oct. 18-19 in the Learning Resource Center lobby.
