Over the past four years, the City College Safety Committee has lobbied against secondhand smoke on campus, and its latest attempt, a proposal for the quad to become a wholly non-smoking area, still seems to have little effect on the district, according to Wendy Gomez, faculty tri-chair of the safety committee and City College nurse.
Last year, the Safety Committee submitted the non-smoking proposal to the college’s Research, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness Office with the hope of change, according to Gomez. The idea was almost immediately swatted down.
“It was decided by the district office that any changes in smoking policy for any of the campuses had to be all the same,” said Gomez.
The only official policy concerning smoking on Los Rios campuses is that there is no smoking inside of buildings, and smokers cannot be within 30 feet of a doorway or air vent, according to Karen Chewning, classified tri-chair of the safety committee.
The smoking committee will continue to deal with smoking issues on campus, but some close to the issue think a different approach is needed if change is to come.
“If anything is going to happen, it won’t happen until the students say they want it,” Gomez said. “Believe me, the administration listens to what the students want.”
The Safety Committee doesn’t make these proposals without student urging, Gomez said, noting that the non-smoking issue specifically has had a history of being a point of contention.

“We had numerous complaints from students about secondhand smoke,” Gomez said. “We do have people on campus who have medical issues, such as asthma, who are affected.”
A large step in dealing with non-smoking issues on campus is the recently formed “district-wide smoking committee,” a board comprised of representatives from all of the Los Rios campuses to address the issue of smoking on campus, according to Chewning.
The committee’s next meeting will be in early October.
For smokers who want to quit, City College offers numerous smoking cessation resources that can be found on the college’s website and in the Health Office in the Counseling Center.
