Casey Rafter, 2020 fall editor-in-chief, joined The Express last semester. This is Rafter’s first semester as an editor for the Express.

He decided to pursue journalism in Fall 2019 after earning an associates degree in communications. He realized he got fulfillment from writing after receiving reinforcement from professors.

“Well, my emails are never short,” Rafter said.

For inspiration Rafter looks up to Jan Haag, The Express’s word adviser, and Shel Silverstein, a famous American writer. As of now, Rafter plans to stay local to Sacramento because of connections he’s already made in the area.

“Relocating would mean starting over,” Rafter said.There are a lot of really great people I’ve worked with here; Jan [Haag], Randy [Allen], and all the people I’ve worked with at The Express.

He says the coronavirus has impacted his experience writing for the Express and even more as editor-in-chief. He turned to other instructors to help adapt during these unfortunate circumstances. Rafter offered advice for incoming writers.

“Listen and don’t be worried about empty space in a conversation…if you jump in, you might miss a good quote.”
