Fresh out of college with a degree in hand, head women’s volleyball coach Laurie Nash found herself looking for a job. It was then, she says, that she decided to instead go back to school for another degree, one that would allow her to follow her passion: volleyball.
Now, Nash has been at the helm of City College’s women’s volleyball team since 2000. Since then, she’s taken the team to the state playoffs multiple times and has given some of her athletes a chance to continue playing at the next level.
“I get the biggest kick out of watching the girls perform independently of me in a match because of what they learn in practice,” Nash says.
Her volleyball timeline started in seventh grade, when she played for her middle school. After hitting a few volleyballs, Nash says she was instantly hooked.
After high school, she attended American River College where she was an All-State outside hitter. At American River, Nash played under assistant coach Debbie Blair. After a year, Blair left to become the head volleyball coach at City College.
Nash received a scholarship to play at Cal Poly Pomona where she earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design.
“The spring after I graduated I got a job coaching club volleyball,” Nash says.
Later, Nash moved back to Northern California, and in 1994 she started working as an assistant coach at Napa Valley College.
Blair says she heard that Nash was back in the area and decided she wanted her former player on the Panthers coaching staff. Nash became City College’s new assistant coach in 1995.
“I knew that I was hiring someone equally strong or better than me,” says Blair.
Blair, who says she is still a big supporter of the volleyball team, remains happy with her coaching pick.

“I believe she is one of the top coaches in the state,” Blair says.
Over the years Nash’s teams have done well. Her office is full of awards–from the nine times her teams have made the state playoffs, to the 10 All-Americans she has coached.
Still, this year has been a struggle, according to the players and coaches.
“We aren’t doing as well as we should be,” says 19-year-old sophomore setter Cecily Basques.
This season, the team has five returning sophomores and only two of them had a considerable amount of playing time last season, Nash says.
Their record is not the same as in years past, but the team continues to stay focused.
“Laurie pushes us individually to be better [athletes] and [to be] mentally stronger,” Basques says.
Business major Akeya Maddox, an 18-year-old freshman outside hitter from Fresno, says she agrees.
“She is all about mental strength,” Maddox says.
Before home matches Nash plays many roles as game time nears controlling the pre-game music, working the crowd and saying hello to friends and family, as well as announcing the athletes from both teams.
“I teach as much as I can in practice and then let’em fly during games.”
