For the first time in 17 years Susurrus, the Sacramento City College Literary Journal, has a new advisor, English Professor Dr. Steve Cirrone, and the journal is seeking submissions for its Oct. 1 deadline.
Cirrone said he has made some small changes to the literary journal, which comes out every spring. In the past written submissions, which include creative nonfiction, fiction and poetry, were submitted in the fall, and photographers and artists submitted their work in the spring.
Now with the additions of two new genres of flash fiction and one-act plays, Cirrone said he and the student staff members have decided to have all work submitted at the same time. The first deadline for work is Oct.1, and the final deadline to submit is Oct. 15. All work should be submitted to [email protected].
Work is accepted from current and former City College students. Students may submit up to four poems, two pieces of creative nonfiction, a one-act play, and two pieces of flash or short fiction.
Cirrone explained that flash fiction is “usually a thousand words or less and is focused and concise. Sometimes it can be complicated, but it is always interesting.
”One-act plays are the other new genre that was added this year. “I have always enjoyed them, and they are also an untapped source,” Cirrone said.

The other new addition this year comes in the method of selecting the pieces for the journal.
Typically in the past the whole class of EngCW450 would come together and go over the submissions for three hours each week through out the fall semester.
Now, Cirrone said, the whole class meets for the first half of the three-hour session with the second of half class consisting of smaller groups reviewing submissions by genre.
Returning Susurrus students say they like the new format.
“The first half of class was in the big group, and the second half of class we’re put into smaller groups, which makes it more organized,” said Amanda Thompson.
