Members of the City College teams wrapped up their season by sending six players to the Nor Cal Championships in early May. Two freshmen and four sophomores were chosen to participate.
The City College women’s team ended its regular 2011 season with one win and eight losses, according to the team’s website. The men’s regular season record ended with nine losses and zero wins.
Despite the losing streak, the players say they tried to persevere and registered nurse major Kat Nguyen says she is excited for next season.
“We are all very rigorous, we practice really hard. Everyone got better, there is not a single person that did not improve,” Nguyen said.
According to head Coach Dave Griffin, the teams see a 50 percent player turnover rate each season so experience is a factor that comes into play on the courts. Even though the teams had a lot of new players this season, Griffin said the teams “did extremely well.”
“[Tennis] can be a roller coaster in the course of one day, so the more experience you have, playing matches and such, the more you are able to grow in your own game,” Griffin said.
Tung Trinh, a first season player and physical therapies assistant major says that the team collectively has intense motivation to get better.

“Everyone wants to get better; they take it seriously,” she said.
Nguyen agreed with Trihn’s assessment.
“We didn’t win a lot but it was fun making friends with everyone on the team. Everyone helps each other out,” he said.
Trinh explained that for him, focus during the games seemed to be a factor because of lack of match experience. As players play more matches, he added, they will be able to relax and get into the fl ow of the game instead of over-thinking their moves.
“The more they get in the mix, the more that will start to play itself out,” Griffin said.
The season’s scores do not reflect the improvement the team has made so far; according to Nguyen, players improved the consistency of their stroke technique, as well as the serve techniques. Nguyen said that other teams had perfected “slices” or hitting the ball in a way to cause it to spin so it drops to the ground. That will be a technique the team plans to focus on next season as well as perfecting the serve and improving consistency of the forehand and backhand strokes.
“[Everyone] improved greatly, and I have some really high expectations for next season,” said Griffin.
