The City College publications win high awards March 27, 2009, at annual Journalism Association of Community Colleges conference in Sacramento
The Sacramento City College Express newspaper and Mainline magazine garnered an impressive 13 awards at the annual Journalism Association of Community Colleges conference held in Sacramento March 26-28, 2009.
Mainline magazine, a City College publication that comes out at the end of each semester, won four first-place awards and the distinction of general excellence, the highest journalistic standard for community college magazines in the state. Only eight magazines won general excellence. Former Express photo editor Michael Iredale won first place for his online photo essay on Folsom Prison’s Braille program.
“It was nice to be recognized for the professional level of publications we put out,” said Express editor in chief Nicole Cardoza, who attended the conference. “We also got to hear a lot about where journalism is going. It’s good to hear that the Express is going in the right direction with its new online focus in the fall.”
The awards were presented to community college newspapers throughout California, based on mail-in entries from articles, photographs and page published in the Express during 2008.
Nearly 600 students from 50 community colleges attended the event. JACC is an association of California and Arizona community college journalism programs designed to provide extended educational opportunities for journalism students and instructors.
