American River College student Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab, 23, was arrested Jan. 7 in Sacramento, after a criminal complaint was filed against him for terrorism-related charges in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, according to Milwaukee-based FOX6 news.

Al-Jayab is being held in the Sacramento County Jail without bail and is also facing up to eight years in prison for lying to federal officials, according to FOX6.

FOX6 reported a criminal complaint from the Office of the United States Attorney Eastern District of California, in which Al-Jayab claimed the trip to Turkey was to visit his sick grandmother when being interviewed by federal officials. FOX40 reports that, according to allegations made in federal court, Al-Jayab used social media to confirm his return to Syria to fight for terrorist organizations.
