The regular season is in the past. Postseason and Conference championships are underway for City College athletics. Here’s a quick recap of the month of April.
WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
The women’s track team won six events at the Big 8 Conference Championships April 23 and 26 at American River College, taking third place overall.
Sianna Willis won her second straight 100-yard dash (12.10 seconds). Daryia Greene claimed her first 400 (57.18) title of the season. Jasmine Loyola’s 12 minutes, 12.95 seconds in the 3,000 steeplechase was the third fastest in school history.
Both relay teams took first at the Conference meet. Willis, Kiara Flenoid, Lauren Smith and Chidinma Nwokocha all helped win the 4×100 (48.13). Greene replaced Willis in the 4×400 (4:00.83) victory.
Thrower Riley Cannon took first in the shot put, with a distance of 12.83 meters, which now sits at eighth place on City’s all-time list. Janessa Moses took second in the shot put. Cannon also placed third in the discus and eighth in the hammer.
BASEBALL
The Panthers finished the regular season on a four-game win streak. In the second game of the final series against Folsom Lake College, catcher Kevin Saenz became the first City baseball player to hit two grand slams in the same game. His nine RBIs helped account for a season-high 23 runs for the Panthers.
City finished the regular season 27-13 with a third-place mark of 15-9 in the Big 8 Conference. The pitching staff boasted the fourth best team earned run average (2.76) in all of California.
The third-seeded Panthers will play host to Chabot College (22-18) in the opening round of the postseason May 4–5 in a best-of-three series.
SWIMMING
City had two swimmers qualify for the state championships, which will take place May 3–5 at De Anza College.
Julia Ng set a City College women’s record in the 50 freestyle at the Big 8 meet. Ng finished third (24.74) at the Big 8 and in the process erased a nine-year-old record of 24.85 by Victoria Ramirez in 2009. She moved into second all-time in City College history in the 100 butterfly at 1:00.37. She will race in both events at the state meet.
After scoring 53 points over three events, Matt Lemire qualified for the 500- and 1650-yard freestyle. Lemire has two second-place finishes in the 1650 this season.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
At the Big 8 Conference Championships, City finished in fifth place overall.
Trevor Holt was the only Panther to win an event at American River College. With a distance of 47.37 meters, Holt won his third hammer throw of the season. Jorgue Hernandez took third with a throw of 38.98 meters. Noni Ifyefobi took fourth (39.82) in the discus to round out the City throwers.
Ibn Frazier, Torrey White, Kamil Jones and Daryl Moppins combined to take third in the 4×100 relay. White placed fourth in the 400 at 49.83 seconds, his best time of the season.
City College will host the NorCal trials May 4 and the finals May 11 for both men’s and women’s track at Hughes Stadium.
SOFTBALL
Tim Kiernan’s squad finished the regular season 23-17 overall, riding a four-game win streak and placing fifth in the Big 8 standings at 13-11.
Elizabeth Caffero finished first among Big 8 players in all three triple crown categories, hitting .513 with 13 homers and 52 runs batted in. Her 13 round-trippers are the second most in a single season by a Panther softball player. Danielle Reyes’ 190 strikeouts are the fifth most in the state and the seventh most in a single season in City College history.
Caffero and Reyes made the All-Big 8 first team while Marissa Rocha, Sydney Craft, Mackenzie Duval and Morgan Silva-Conner were named to the second team, according to Kiernan.
City will play at Feather River College May 1 in the first round of the postseason as a 15-seed.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
David Griffin’s women’s tennis team finished the regular season at 3-7 in the Big 8 and had two players compete in the Ojai State Tournament April 26 at Ventura College.
Denise Mosciatti was the lone singles player to qualify for the Panthers. At the state tourney, Mosciatti enjoyed an opening round victory over Stacey Bendanillo from Imperial Valley College (6-4, 6-1) before being eliminated in the round of 64 by second-seeded Sandra DeFrancescu of De Anza College (3-6, 0-6).
Mosciatti also partnered with Steffi Campos in the doubles bracket, but the pair fell to Serena Contreras and Kayleen Sanchez, a 15-seed from Bakersfield (1-6, 2-6).
