The City College RISE program and the Sacramento Food Bank have partnered for a new service to provide food security to students and their families.
RISE–which stands for Respect, Integrity, Self-Determination and Education–started providing weekly food donations March 16 to students. Any current student can sign up. The only information required is a student ID and household size.
Thanks to the weekly sign up information, Nyla Vaivai and the staff at RISE know how much food to bring every Wednesday.
“They gather up the food, put it in bins–we’re talking truck loads– and it gets brought over by staff and is unloaded by staff,” said RISE Student Personnel Assistant Valerie Moore.
Students help with the food distribution when they see the trucks pull up. They unload the food and prepare the boxes.
“It’s just this whole family atmosphere, that is what RISE is all about. We are all about community and helping each other grow,” said Moore.
After students have had the chance to get what they need, even staff are welcome to come in.
“At the end of the day, what isn’t given away we give it to a homeless shelter, so it’s going to good all the way around,” said RISE counselor Keith Muraki.
So far the number of City College students signing up has been growing each week.

In addition to the weekly food distribution, RISE is attempting to do a major distribution where the Sacramento Food Bank would bring its trucks on campus the last Wednesday of each month. This proposed distribution is planned to start April 27 at the parking lot area by RISE.
“It’ll be like a farmer’s market, so to speak,” said Moore.
Students can sign up to receive food every Tuesday at RISE in Temp 5, or call (916) 650-2782. Food is distributed Wednesday from noon – 5 p.m. at RISE.
