Imagine for a moment you and several friends find yourself in a seemingly normal room, until you notice a large red digital timer counting down. The only exit is locked, there’s no key to be found and you must work together to find clues and solve puzzles to earn your freedom before the time is up.
This thrilling adventure is, in essence, Escape Sacramento, a new interactive, live-action puzzle game in Sacramento.
Escape Sacramento is loosely based on video games such as “Crimson Room” (a Japanese point-and-click game from 2004). The room-size puzzle is meant to be both fun and challenging.
While various cities worldwide have promoted this type of event, Ethan Rodriguez-Torrent and Max Sutter are the team bringing mind-boggling puzzles to Sacramento.
Together they created Escape Industries in New Haven, Connecticut, and shortly after they came to Sacramento to open a second location in a city they saw as up-and-coming, according to Rodriguez-Torrent
The game is suspenseful because it is time-based, but nothing is meant to be purposely scary.
There is an alternate exit for those who might feel claustrophobic, and the “Escape team” is very friendly and accommodating, whether a group is able to complete the puzzle or not.

Torrent said to think of it as a murder mystery puzzle-solving, team-adventure. In the end, the goal is to have a good time.
Currently, there are two different puzzles to choose from; The Gallery and The Study.
The Gallery is the slightly easier puzzle that allows a group of seven participants.
The Study has a lower overall success rate and only allows for a group of six.
“[The rooms are] made to look exactly like an art gallery or exactly like a private study, except there are certain things about the room that kind of call out to you,” Rodriguez-Torrent said. “ Those things become your hints, and they start to move you along a series of puzzles you have to solve together.”
If you feel ready to take on the challenge, Escape Sacramento is open Thursday–Sunday and located on 19th and I streets in Midtown Sacramento. Either rooms can be fully booked, or partially booked for new potential challenges.
Tickets are $27 for adults, and $23 for students and children. You can book a room at escapesacramento.com.
