City College baseball was victorious in the finale of a three-game series April 26 against San Joaquin Delta College by a score of 5-3 to take the series and first-place position in the Big 8 Conference.
“We won a series with a good team,” said Panthers’ baseball head coach Derek Sullivan. “Things can change but we have the hammer on them, the tie-breaker, and we know it was important in that way.”
The Panthers opened a three-game series against the Mustangs April 22 with a 6-4 victory at home. In game two of the series, the Mustangs were able to edge out a 5-4 win in 10 innings to even the series at a game apiece.
Panthers’ starting pitcher Gabe Araj gave up four hits in Friday’s game, walked two and allowed two runs to score. Only one of those runs would be an earned run. With the win, Araj improved his record to 5-2.
With four errors by the Panthers in the game, the win wasn’t the team’s prettiest of the season. It was an especially rough day defensively for shortstop Jorge Perez-Bonill, charged with three of the four errors.
“We didn’t play particularly well, outside of we really competed,” said Sullivan. “Delta is a really good team and it could’ve swung the other way for sure. They’re a really good coached program but we did enough to win.”
City College got on board early in the bottom of the first inning when third baseman Jerrod Bravo came to the plate with a runner on second and one on third base. Bravo hit an infield single up the middle that scored Jared James from third. The Panthers scored on a double steal two batters later with runners on first and third base. Bravo stole second base, drawing a throw from the Mustangs catcher. On the throw, Panthers’ right fielder Kashka Dudley stole home. The Panthers had a 2-1 lead after the first inning and would never relinquish it.

With two outs and bases loaded Bravo stepped up to the plate and delivered once again. This time Bravo ripped a line drive laser right back to Mustangs’ pitcher Sam Held. Held was unable to hang on to the ball for the out. Tyler Houlihan scored from third base. James Dudely advanced to third base from second base on the line drive then scored on the throwing error.
City College was cruising to a victory until the Mustangs threatened in the top half of the ninth inning. Panthers’ pitcher Brandon Nunn started the inning, allowing the first three Mustang batters to reach base on two walks and a single. Bases loaded, Perez-Bonilla committed his third error of the game. Perez-Bonilla’s error allowed a Mustangs base runner to score and keep the bases loaded.
Nunn was able to end the threat and save the game on the next batter up, forcing Mustangs’ first basemen C.J. Owens into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
The Panthers overall record is now 21-7 and their Big 8 Conference record improves to 10-5. The Panthers end the series in Big 8 Conference first-place position.
James and Bravo have been named pre-season NorCal All-Americans.
