The City College men’s basketball team lost at home against Modesto Junior College Jan. 10 when Modesto’s Anthony Hubbard drained a corner three at the buzzer to top the Panthers 79-77.
The Panthers led by as much as 13 in the contest, but a sluggish defensive showing and offensive struggles in the second half (Modesto outscored City College by 15 points in the second period) allowed the Pirates to chip away at the Panthers’ lead and ultimately win as time expired.
“We were just really flat (in the second half),” said City College men’s basketball head coach Andrew Jones. “We weren’t playing with fire; we weren’t playing confidently and I was very disappointed to see that.”
The Panthers lead began to slip away in the second period as Modesto crept closer and closer until a 3-pointer from backup guard Evan Grimes tied it up at 55-55 midway through the half.
From there the teams traded baskets, as City College seemed to come alive after a poor start to the second half. With 1:15 to go, after a defensive stop Antwoine Davis scored 2 from the paint to give City College a 1-point lead at 77-76.
Still at 77-76 and with 10 seconds, remaining Davis was fouled in the key and went to the line where he would miss both free throws, leaving the door open for the Pirates. Modesto drove down court and with under a second to go the ball was batted out of bounds off City College, giving the Pirates one final chance.
Bodies whipped around the court as the Panthers tried to prevent a potentially heartbreaking last second shot by the Pirates. Modesto center Josh Allen set a screen for guard Anthony Hubbard at the top of the key and Hubbard made his way to the far corner beyond the 3-point line. The ball would find its way to him on the inbound pass for a catch and shoot that seemed to hang in the air forever. He nailed it and his teammates rushed the floor to pile on and congratulate Hubbard as the Pirates ended up with a two-point victory at 79-77.

“It’s an up-and-down game and it feels good to be able to win like that,” said Hubbard.
In their comeback the Pirates relied heavily on Hubbard who recorded a season high 29 points (including four second-half three-pointers), and Allen, who controlled the paint as the Panthers struggled to find an answer for the six-foot-eight-inch 195-pound big man down low.
“In the first half we weren’t playing together, but we got back out after halftime and everything started clicking,” said Allen. “Coach had me playing in the post and it worked out pretty good.”
City College star and Big 8 conference scoring leader Davis was held to just 5 points as the Panthers struggled to get a rhythm on offense. Sophomore forward Bobby Barnes helped pick up the slack with 20 points and freshman Derrick Rhodes put up 21.
“It was disappointing,” said Jones. “They put pressure on our point guard and that gave us problems but we certainly had every chance to win the game. We missed some clutch free throws and they made a huge shot there at the end.”
The Panthers take the court again Jan. 14 as they head to Elk Grove to take on Jaycob Velasco and the Cosumnes River College Hawks. First place in the Big 8, the Hawks are red hot this season.
