City College’s first-ever Week of Welcome took place across campus this past week, including Welcome Day, an event that created a place for clubs and programs to showcase opportunities available to students.
Welcome Day was held Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the quad and featured several events, such as the dance and cheer team performing a number in a pep rally, a barbecue with burgers and hot dogs, and club and academic program tables to provide information to students.
A few of the presenters at the event included the Sac City Free Thinkers, a voter registry put on by the Student Associated Council, and a job booth for Sketchers shoes.
“It’s like a giant megaphone to make the student voice more audible,” said Autumn Thomas-Morales of Occupy Sac City, a new group on campus, which intends to give an open forum for students to voice their concerns relating to the education process.

Another group present at Welcome Day was Amnesty International.
“It’s about educating the community,” stated Jackie Pfister of the Amnesty International City College charter, a group which advocates for human rights.
They have tentatively scheduled a speaker on Oct. 1 concerning capital punishment and a demonstration on Oct. 18. The speaker is a former inmate who spent time on death row.
RISE is a student support organization that was also presenting at the Welcome Day event. This group provides counseling, computer services, book loans, tutorial services, and college tours especially to first-year college students.
Other events held during the Week of Welcome included a poetry slam contest, an ice cream social, Culture Day and the showing of the movie “Hunger Games”.
