Twin brothers Jon and Matt Burgess are the owners of the burger and barbecue restaurant Burgess Brothers’ Burgers, which will hold its grand opening on Saturday, Sept. 8, across the street from City College.
The restaurant at 2114 Sutterville Road opened its doors Aug. 20, according to the brothers’ Facebook page. The owners are offering a 15 percent discount for any City College student who shows a valid student ID card.
Jon is a battalion chief for Sacramento City Fire Department, and Matt works for the California Highway Patrol.
“Back when I was the spokesman for the fire department, ‘Good Day, Sacramento’ contacted me and they knew that I had a twin brother,” says Jon. “They wanted to do a burger battle between the firemen and the police officers. We both went on TV and made the best burger we could. After that. we thought, why don’t we open a restaurant?”
“My wife told us we should cater first,” Jon continued. “We started catering and we did that for about a year and that grouped into fundraising.”
They did fundraising for the American Diabetes Association, and for local churches as well, according to the brothers..
“We actually smoke our burgers [on the outdoor grill] and finish off the cook [of the burgers] inside [the restaurant] to order,” says Jon. “You get a different taste in your burger that [you] wouldn’t get anywhere else.”
