The members of Men of Purpose sat inside a meeting room in the counseling offi ce March 1 listening to Rayford L. Johnson, author of “Thug Mentality Exposed,” present a preview on a potential educational workshop.
Johnson’s workshop covered his novel and included a slide show presentation that exposes the ancient culture roots of the term “thug” since Babylon.
“Los Angeles is No. 3 on the list of cities with most gang related violence in California,” says Johnson.
“Sacramento is No. 2 on that same list. [The] Mack Road [area in South Sacramento] is even more dangerous than south central L.A.”
Members of M.O.P booked Johnson at City College with help of childhood friend, Ken Times, a counselor at City College’s Extended Opportunities Programs and Services.
Times is also the founder of M.O.P, a program that aims to help men of color graduate, obtain higher education and succeed.

That direction is helping students decide what they want to do and who they want to be, Times says. The program will open doors and allow the students to have a bigger chance for success, he adds.
“What we really want to do is visually show these students that there are real success stories out there,” says Tony Davis, City College counselor and M.O.P. co-founder.
Because M.O.P is a student-run organization, Davis says that it provides skills in leadership and organization for its members.
“We want to show working and maturing models of success,” Davis says. “This way it will motivate [students] because there isn’t a better way to be motivated then to see
someone whose been in your shoes and have succeeded.”
There were a number of similar efforts before M.O.P was started, so in a way, Time says, the current organization is a rebirth from older programs and clubs from Cosumnes River College and American River College.
“Men of Purpose is a little bit of The Bridge, Barber Shop Conversations and Brother 2 Brother all put together,” Times says. “I know we aren’t going to change the world in a semester, but a little at a time does help participate [in] the bigger picture.”
