“It was intense because the elements weren’t on our side, so it was challenging,” said Spence.
Coach Dave Griffin says City College tennis players have good attitudes, which come out in the games. Teammates like Renteria and Spence work well together “because they communicate well with each other,” says Griffin.
What also worked well for Renteria and Spence was their footwork on the court.

Griffin has been emphasizing drills on volleys, Buryak says, and reminding players to “hit the ball with a purpose.”
City College tennis players have been practicing volleys — where the ball is hit on the net and lands in the front of the court by the net on the other side. They have also been practicing their ground strokes but both remained difficult to pull off in the weather conditions of the game.
“[The women’s team] had trouble [because it was windy] on the net with their volleys and with their ground strokes, but they were moving together and had good rallies [continuous hitting of the ball],” said Buryak.
Kateri Ngyuen played a long singles match with fierce serves from Fresno’s Elizabeth Lauritzen, the score was 1-6, 2-6. Ngyuen smiled when she talked to her assistant coach and received claps of encouragement from teammates.
“They [Fresno] are bringing on a good game,” said Buryak. “They have good form, good serves, good stokes and strategies, but our girls don’t give up that easily.”
