Recent news of the killing of a Yale University student hasn’t prompted anxious calls to the  City College police department, but campus officers remain committed to security practices designed for safety.

Annie Le, who grew up in El Dorado County, was found dead in a building where she did research. A man who worked there has been arrested in connection with the 24-year-old woman’s slaying.

“All [campus officers] here, they all go through the same training as city police officers,” said Los Rios Police Department Sergeant Brian Washington.  “They’re going to do what’s necessary to make this campus safe.”

Washington attributes leadership by Captain Valerie Cox and the hands-on approach of his officers with students and staff to maintain a secure City College community.

Using six officers for general patrol, they travel campus on foot, by golf cart, and in their vehicles, Washington said. Officers can often be seen in parking lots, walking the Quad, or taking a turn checking inside campus facilities.

There are also emergency blue light posts on campus are equipped with phones tied directly to dispatch for police response or a personal escort request. Campus lighting is also checked by officers and a camera system for campus-wide security application is expected within two years, according to Washington.

City College’s police department also promotes proactive measures with crime prevention and safety awareness programs, and police participation in campus operations teams, such as the Safety Committee.

Wendy Gomez, college nurse and faculty tri-chairperson for the Safety Committee, explained the committee addresses operational issues brought by faculty, staff and students to improve overall safety in concert with proactive methods by police.

“I think our campus police have a strong presence,” Gomez said. “I see them frequently and so I feel pretty safe on campus.”

Crime statistics data adds weight to Gomez’s remarks. LRPD statistics show criminal activity reports have dropped significantly over three years in the categories of vehicle burglary and motor vehicle theft. Reports of sexual offenses and aggravated assault are exceptionally rare and there have been no such reports of such activity this year, according to Washington.

La Donya Reed, City College sociology major and member of the Inter-Club Council Commissioner for Associated Student Government, isn’t especially troubled by the recent news accounts, despite working later on campus some evenings.

“For the most part, I think we are pretty safe,” Reed said.
