City College wrestling team took second place in total team points and saw six of its wrestlers make it to the final rounds Sept. 17 at the 28th annual City College Wrestling Tournament in the North Gymnasium.
Fresno City College won the tournament with 124 points. City College took second with 93 points despite having seven injured wrestlers sit-out during the opening tournament from previous injuries.
“I hope I showed that even though these guys are stronger, I have the technique to compete,” said Laith Alnassiri, 18, who had a good showing, according to head wrestling coach Dave Pacheco.
Some of the talented sophomore wrestlers competing at the tournament included returning wrestlers Gerson Nkunku, 197 pounds, his brother Milton Nkunku, 149 pounds, and Tyler Edwards, 19, who competed at 184 pounds.
Edwards said his mind-set coming into the opening tournament was of victory.
“Every match is a big deal. You either win or you lose,” he said. “I want to win.”
Milton Nkunku, 18, nursing major, reached the finals at 149 pounds by going 2-0 to get there. Milton took second place and went home with a No. 2 seed, which is one better than the three-seed he had coming into the tournament.
“I haven’t stopped working since spring,” Milton said of all the running and cardio that contributed to his performance.
Gerson performed well throughout this year’s tournament, using techniques such as a double-leg takedown and winning by dominating margins like the 20-6 victory he obtained in his first match, while on route to winning first place in his weight class at 197 pounds.

Pacheco expressed that the injuries to the seven wrestlers were not severe but since it was the first tournament of the season, he said he felt it was beneficial to sit out the injured wrestlers and allow them to heal properly.
Benching the injured wrestlers allowed an opportunity for potential young talent to flourish at the opening event.
“We are such a deep team this season,” Pacheco said. “We can’t bring everyone to every tournament so if they want to go they have to compete and show us what they can do.”
Bret Schumann, 19, psychology major, won two of his matches by pin on his way to winning first place in his weight class at 165 pounds. Schumann said he sees himself as the “big dog’’ in every match he is in.
“Take care of business in the class and on the mat and you’ll earn respect,” Schumann said.
Nathan Monck, 18, psychology major, 133 pounds, said that the victory of teammates, like Schuman, inspire him to stay hungry and motivated to build on his fourth-place finish respectively.
Other City College freshman talent included wrestlers Efren Rodriguez and Enrique Barajas who competed against each other in the 141-pound finals with Enrique Barajas edging out his teammate 7-5 in a close win for first place.
City College wrestling is starting the season strong with a second-place team trophy, three first-place winners, and three second-place winners, all while being down seven athletes due to injuries in the opening tournament.
The Panthers gear up and hit the mat on the road Saturday, Oct. 1, at 9 a.m. in Santa Ana.
