Douglas Burris, former City College president from 1979 to 1984, died March 6.
During his presidency, Burris oversaw remodeling of the Administration of Justice building and helped turn an engineering building into what is now known as the Amalia Fischbacher Fine Arts Buildings, according to an article by City College Public Information Officer Rick Brewer. His meetings with student government to bridge gaps between students and the school’s standing committee are documented in the City College Archives.
In addition to his work at City College, Burris served as president at Cosumnes River College and Dean of Instruction at American River College. After retiring from Los Rios in 1991, he became Assistant to the Chancellor for Community Colleges at the Nevada System of Higher Education.
Donations in honor of Burris can be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
