Paid fundraisers of the non-profit Save the Children are making their presence known at City College in hopes of finding members of the campus community who would like to sponsors children in need.
“Our primary goal here is to inform and educate the public, and get people to sign up today as child sponsors,” said Darren Auger, a Save the Children fundraiser recruiting sponsors at City College. “One out of four children are currently living before the poverty line here in the United States alone. They also live in harsh conditions, where the basics like good nutrition, education, medical care or dental are hard to come by.”
According to Lynn Hughes of Grassroots Campaign, Inc., child death by disease is unnecessary and can be all together eliminated..
“About a few years ago, it was about 24,000 children that were dying daily from preventable and treatable causes—right now, it is 19,000,” said Hughes,
Like others, Hughes wants to bring the amount of children dying from preventable diseases to zero. “I believe it will happen in my lifetime.”
City College students Jessica Lambert concurs with Hughes and said she would like to be a part of the cause.
“I think it’s great, and I wish I (could) help out,” said Lambert who used to volunteer for a similar organization. “If I could get a job here, well, I’d go crazy.”
Quite possibly, Lambert can.
In addition to recruiting sponsors, Save the Children is also actively looking to fill full-time and management employment positions.
