Renovations may be looming on the horizon for City College thanks to Measure M, a $475 million bond passed last November.
The bond will help Los Rios community colleges improve campuses with new buildings and modernized equipment for departments in need.
“We have an exciting modernization program planned for the college that will ultimately benefit generations of student to come,” said City College Vice President of Administrative Services Robert Martinelli. “Many of our buildings date back to the mid-’30s, so they are desperately in need of updating and modernizing to be ready for today’s students and tomorrow’s.”

“Updating technology and a couple of more SIMS (robotic simulations) labs would be nice,” City College nursing student Kirsten Smethurst said. “Don’t get me wrong, they’re good. I want the caliber of the facility to reflect the caliber of the program.”
Included in the renovation of these facilities will be clean technology that uses renewable energy sources and energy conservation methods.
“There are a number of features that are incorporated, including reflective roofs, energy efficient lighting throughout, and so forth,” Martinelli said. “For future projects there are plans to actually seek certification of buildings to comply with even higher environmental standards.”
“’Green collar technology’ (the installation, maintenance and repair of the electronics and hardware used in clean technology) is one of the areas that could use more classroom and facility expenditures,” said Melvin Duvall, the electronics department chair. “Measurement equipment and training demonstrators in solar, wind and alternative energy systems would help support our alternative energy training components we put into our current classroom presentations.”
The plans for renovations are expected to begin in 2010 and the Measure M bond will fund these projects.
