The recently formed City College Republicans Club held the first of a series of lectures March 24 on the pivotal differences between far-left and far-right politics.
City College math professor Lyudmila Fasman explained some fundamental ideological differences between the conservative libertarianism of the right and socialist and Marxist theories of the far left. Having spent half her life in Soviet Russia, Fasman relayed her own personal experiences of what living under Communism and state socialism was like. The majority of Fasman’s speech to the audience compared and contrasted the right-wing and the left-wing ideologies.
Student leader of the Republican Club, Monica Guzman, formed the club in response to what she saw as a liberal bias at City College. She said she hopes to show another political view to City College students by spreading the conservative philosophy around campus.
“It’s something that I feel is missing from campus,” Guzman said. “Whether or not someone agrees with our particular point of view, it’s still important to give students the chance to listen to the other side of the coin because on a college campus, this is where we socially develop.”
Steve Macias, Associated Student Government president-elect and current secretary, is treasurer of the club. He says that he enjoys the club because of the support they have from local Republican officials.
“They want to help us spread the same message, that the solution to our problems, these economic problems, are found in the conservative philosophy,” Macias said.
Macias has high hopes for the growth of the club, which currently has seven active members.
“I’m expecting exponential growth,” Macias said. “I’m expecting this campus to turn red, in a sense.”
The club plans to be active on campus, increasing voter registration and turnouts for elections. In addition to Macias’ win at the polls, Guzman also ran unopposed for entry into ASG. They will be sworn in May 13.
