But the motto is “learn, work and earn units,” at City  College in the  Work Experience and Internships Center,  which is dedicated to  helping students find jobs and earn  units through paid or  unpaid internships.

May Yang is the internship developer at City College, who interned for a year at an elementary school before being hired for her current position.

“I had to fight a battle to get in,” Yang says.

She felt as if she wasn’t as qualified as the other applicant going for the same job.

Although she graduated from UC Berkeley, Yang only had a bachelor’s degree, making others significantly more qualified. Fortunately for Yang, her intern experience put her on top and she was able to get the job.

“There was no such thing as an internship while I attended school,” says Wendy Slobodnik the Intern Coordinator at City College.

Slobodnik graduated with her masters degree from Sacramento State University.

“Job searching is a crap shoot because this economy is so rough now days,” Slobodnik says. “People send resumes hoping to get a call back.”

Slobodnik stresses that firsthand experience is the key to success.

Yang recalls a story of a young man who interned for KCRA3 News for a year and a half, and made such a big impact that he was soon hired for a permanent, paid position.

“Some of the best work is the work you enjoy doing,” Yang says.

According to Yang, if a student is interested in applying for an internship, the student should do so in a field he or she plans to pursue a career in, though internships can be really fun, too.

Yang also advises that getting your name out to prospective employers. She recalls during her internship she would ask her boss about open positions or connections to people who were willing to hire her.

The Work Experience and Internship Center also takes the time to help students develop their resumes and hold mock interviews in preparation for real life situations.

Interning students will also earn units for their work. They can earn up to 4 units of internship credit per semester.

“It fulfills AA/AS Area III requirements, [and] you can earn units and enhance your job skills and training,” Yang says.

On City College campus, during the spring semester a job fair will be held and local employers will be attending to offer paid and unpaid positions.
