City College running back Leonard Skattebo carried the load for his football team Sept. 11 in the Panthers 23-7 victory over the Foothill College Owls.

On the first touchdown of the game, Skattebo got the ball, cut to the left behind his offensive line, then proceeded to run over two defensive backs on his way to the end zone. And that was just the beginning of the night for the sophomore back.

“The [offensive line] gave me room to make plays, and luckily for me, I only had to try and break tackles from safeties,” said Skattebo. “With all respect to safeties, they’re not going to come up and make too many plays.”

Skattebo hurdled over three different defenders and ran over several more as he finished the night with over 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

“It was all instinct. I’ve never had that happen before,” said Skattebo. “I worked out all offseason on trimming down on my body weight and lost 15 pounds. It got me better athletically, making cuts and getting bouncier on my feet. It showed today.”

The starting running back wasn’t the only one with a big day, though. Freshman wideout Keith Brown continued to show that he’s reliable as the top receiving threat for second-year starting quarterback Jason Samuels.

Samuels targeted Brown often, as the two connected on eight passes for over 100 yards and a touchdown. Arguably the biggest offensive play came from an 80-yard touchdown throw from Samuels to Brown that put Panthers ahead 23-0 in the third quarter.

As Brown described it after the game, the play came after he’d noticed something with the cornerbacks: They were shading inside, allowing the receivers to be open on the wheel routes.

“The game plan was to get the corners to come up so that we could hit them deep,” said Brown. “The screens brought them up more, and made them think that we were going to run screens all game. That deep play executed when we needed it to and we came out victorious.”

The victory gave head coach Dannie Walker his second win of the day, as he missed the majority of the game because his wife was giving birth. Defensive coaches John Herlihy and Tony Kehl took over the play calling for the night and didn’t disappoint.

The Panthers are on the road for their next game, Sept. 19 to take on Santa Rosa Junior College, who started the season 0-1 after a 27-17 loss to Delta College.
