City College women’s basketball team mounted a successful comeback in a victory over the Modesto Pirates Jan. 10, as the Panthers overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to win in overtime.

The Panthers overtook the Pirates for the win thanks to a clutch play executed by Ashlyn Monk, Bebe Williams, and Unique Woodson down the stretch. Sophomore center Williams dominated the paint on her way to her third double-double of the season, collecting 21 points and 13 rebounds to go along with two blocks and three steals; Williams with 11 and Monk 10 combined for 21 of City College’s 30 points in the second half as the Panthers rallied late.

“(Williams) is always a monster down there (in the key),” said freshman guard Monk of her teammate.

The Panthers struggled with turnovers in the first half—26 turnovers total in the game—and the Pirates capitalized, getting out to an early 10-point lead. Strong defensive play kept the Panthers in the game, limiting the damage of an ineffective Panthers offense during the first.

“Its really my philosophy (defense); we have to be able to stop people,” Head Coach Devin Engebretsen said. “We were still in the game (at halftime) because we played defense.”

The Panthers and Pirates traded baskets to start the second half. The Pirates’ lead idled around 10 points until at the seven-minute mark, momentum shifted in favor of City College as Monk converted on a three-point play after being fouled on a drive to the hoop.

On the following Panthers’ possession, Monk drained a jumper for 3 and with 5 unanswered points from Monk the Pirates lead was cut from 11 points to only 6 at 40-46. City College would narrow Modesto’s lead to one with 2:40 left in regulation when Monk hit a contested corner three for the Panthers’ first lead of the half at 48-46.

Monk credited the Panthers late-game production to “the determination and drive to want to win and not to be 0-2 [in conference play], to even it out at 1-1.”

The Panthers found themselves down again with 20 seconds to go, when Rayelle Ross came up with a clutch steal giving City College one last chance to even the score. Williams would do just that a moment later when she scored two from inside, tying it up at 51-51 to wrap up the second half and send it to overtime where the Panthers would outscore Modesto 10-7 for a 61-58 victory. With the win the Panthers improve to 8-7 on the season.
