LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Re: “Where have all the advisers gone?”

We, the representatives of clubs through Inter-Club Council and Student Leadership and Development would like to respond to the Express article about club advisers.

First, advisers are not direct representatives for SCC clubs. The main responsibility of a club adviser is to make sure that students
follow school rules and not get into trouble. Advisers basically make sure students follow correct procedures when conducting business. They also give advice, offer assistance, and encourage leadership.

Second, the article seemed to be exploring two concepts. It stated that students should be ethnically represented and should do it themselves by starting a club. Later, the article stated club advisers represent the students and their clubs.

Third, advisers are not carriers of all club information. The best way to know about a club is to attend a meeting. A second suggestion would be to attend an Inter-Club Council meeting where one can find information about all clubs.

Fourth, all 12 of the advisers that you contacted do care about their students. We are deeply offended that the comment was made stating, “Due to the fact that no advisers chose to represent their club or students in this article, that leads me to believe that they all either had dire family emergencies lasting the entire week, they unanimously contracted the deadly Avian Flu, or none of them care enough about the club or the students involved to take 15 minutes out of their day to answer a few questions.” To put it bluntly, advisers do not get paid overtime. Being an adviser is purely voluntary.

Advisers go beyond normal job duties to assist students with clubs. It is obvious that advisers do care about students and improving the lives of others.
