With the 82nd annual Academy Awards fast approaching, the Crest Theatre is showing the short animated and live action films that received a nomination.

Of the live-action pieces presented, “Kavi” and “The New Tenants” stood out.

“Kavi” is the tale of a young boy and his family being forced into slavery in India. It shines a light on a global issue still plaguing millions of humans. Though in the film Kavi, the young boy, finds the strength needed to turn against his “boss” in order to gain his and hopefully his family’s freedom.

“The New Tenants” takes a twisted comical look into the day in the lives of a gay couple who have recently moved into an apartment only to find that the last tenant’s untimely death in a triple homicide left a few matters to tie up.

Of the nominated animation pieces presented, “French Roast” and “The Lady and the Reaper” enticed me the most.

“French Roast” involves a businessman, a homeless man and a nun in a coffee shop used to show that once you look past the surface of someone, the truth you find could be very different from the one perceived.

“The Lady and the Reaper” tells of the fight for the soul of an old woman between Death and a doctor. It goes to show that we all have our time and some of us are more willing to pass on than we might think.

However, it was an animated piece that moved me the most. “The Kenemotograph” tells the story of how we overlook the time we have with those around us, unknowingly taking advantage of their feelings. It is a mediation on how lose out when we neglect those close to us and that an accomplishment is lessened without that someone to share it with.

All the short pieces presented were a pleasant experience you see. The animated shorts are more of a family affair, with the exception of the last piece, which gives you a 30-second break to remove children due to strong language and violence. The live shorts are geared toward an adult crowd, with tougher and more graphic material covered.
