More than sixty college and university representatives set up tables with school logos and knickknacks to give away on the quad Sept. 26 while handing out pamphlets with transfer requirements to City College students.
The 24th annual Transfer Day, held every fall semester, was put together by the Transfer Center. Representatives from the University of California and the California State University systems as well as out-of-state colleges were on hand for the three-hour event to talk to students about transfer options.
Transfer Center clerk Parisa Hassani was one of the City College representatives in attendance.
“Transfer Day is the day we interview the representatives,” said Hassani. “It helps you connect with the right people. It’s helpful for students because if students have important questions about the school, they could ask in person.”
Alicia Orozco, journalism and communications major, went to the event looking for more information about colleges. Alicia spoke to three colleges about a potential transfer and the requirements it would take.
“It’s an opportunity to know what your options are,” said Orozco. “It’s a good way to know what colleges can offer to you as a student and help direct you towards your path.”
Regional transfer counselor Richard Frische representing Arizona State University, one of the out-of-state colleges in attendance.
“I think it’s important because it helps expand students’ worldviews beyond their immediate backyard,” said Frische, “events like Transfer Day where you can bring in a lot of universities in the state and out of state. Students can get a view of a lot of options they may not have considered before.”
According to Sonoma State Representative Erin Butt, some schools have more transfer students than incoming freshmen. Colleges and universities like Sonoma State use Transfer Day to provide people with information and opportunities.
“We have a 60% transfer student population. That is something we are very proud of,” said Butt “We have the No. 1 two-year transfer graduation rate within the CSU system, so transfer days are really important to us. We are a transfer-serving campus within the CSU system, which is overall serving California community colleges.”
The City College Transfer Center is located Rodda Hall North (RHN) 147 and is open Monday–Thursday 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., and Friday 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. It’s online at scc.losrios.edu/transfer/
