Panthers show strong offense and defense in victory
City College softball took down Big 8 Conference rival American River College 9-1 at home March 31 in what the coach considered one of the more complete games the team played this season.
“I thought that we played one of our better games all year,” said head coach Tim Kiernan. “We pitched very well, we played good defense and got a lot of key hits.”
The Panthers faced a shaky start in the top of first inning. In the inning, Kiernan decided to walk Jennifer Woo, ARC’s best statistical hitter, which later led to a bases loaded situation. However, two groundouts later, the Panthers escaped the inning with no runs on one hit.
“[Woo] can hit the ball out of the park,” said Kiernan. “You’ve got an open base, so you put her on. We put her on base, and she didn’t score, or hit it out of the park, or get a hit all day.”
In the bottom of the first, designated hitter Megan Anthony hit a RBI double. One batter later, she scored an unearned run from a fielding error by the Beavers, and the Panthers took an early 2-0 lead.
The Beavers scored their only run in the third inning on a RBI double by shortstop Cindy Van Bogart. The hit was also the last on the day for the team.
The Panthers stepped on the throttle in the fourth and scored six runs on five hits, including a two-run homerun from first baseman Erikka Burke — her sixth on the season.
After their strong fourth inning performance, the Panthers got a walk-off run and ended the game on a run rule in the sixth. The score came from a RBI double by catcher Kaitlyn Leffle, her only hit of the game.

The Panthers changed the batting order around for the game and switched some of the hitters at the top of the order with the some of the hitters at the bottom. According to Kiernan, the change worked well and it may be done again in the future.
“We’ve got to go with hot bats, and sometimes defense,” said Kiernan.
Panthers’ pitcher Jostyn Bebout (9-6) got the starting nod and allowed one run on three hits and two errors.
Second baseman Emily Murphy walked off the field in the second inning because of a leg injury. Madison Butcoff replaced the injured Murphy and got several stops on defense and a RBI single on offense.
“[Murphy] has got a bad hamstring, and she’s been going on and off all year,” said Kiernan.
The Panthers will face West Valley College next in a non-conference doubleheader April 4 at City College.
