The program originally started as an experiment with three of Barnes & Noble’s 636 campus bookstores. There was such a positive response from students that the company expanded the idea to 25 of its stores, and there is no plan to slow expansion.

Barnes & Noble, along with other growing rental programs, says it seeks to persuade students to look beyond the conventional buying and reselling of textbooks, and to save over 50 percent with its new system.

“This semester I only paid $60,” said music major Alex Castanza. “But last semester [they] cost over $300.”
