BLM Sacramento and NAACP Sacramento have joined forces to host the sixth annual Reclaim MLK march Monday, Jan. 18.

In past years, City College has been a stop in the parade on foot through Sacramento to honor the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. This year, the event has been converted to a car caravan to ensure that participants maintain appropriate social distance, according to organizers.

The car caravan will begin in North Sacramento at Grant Union High School at 9 a.m. and end at Sacramento State University.

According to Black Lives Matter Sacramento founder Tanya Faison, the march was named “Reclaim MLK” as a means to re-appropriate the narrative provided by Dr. King’s legacy.

“People tend to take Martin Luther King Jr. and fit him in whatever narrative they want him to be a part of,” Faison said. “A lot of times they will quote him towards black people telling us to be more like Martin Luther King. He was arrested over 30 times so he would not be marching with the police. He was anti-capitalism, he was anti-war, he was very radical. A lot of people don’t know that.”

The Reclaim MLK Car Caravan Facebook Invite welcomes participants to decorate their cars and join the parade.

After departing Grant High School, the caravan will pick up groups at City College and the Oak Park Community Center before gathering for a short rally at Sacramento State.
