Spring break is just days away for all of us here at City College. For most students and faculty, the week-long vacation is much needed. Before we head for the beach or the city—or the couch, the two major protests against education cuts have occurred this month in Sacramento one just finishing yesterday. These protests showed, that students and professors alike value education and want to see change.
The cover of this edition of the Express focuses on the protest that happened on the steps of our state Capitol within the last 24 hours. Sacramento has witnessed swarms of students and educators, all marching in support of lowering the costs of a higher education in California.
March 4 kicked off the first round of marches this month with the No Cuts to Education protest around the capitol. According to the Sacramento Bee, “about 1,000 demonstrators gathered for a peaceful, almost festive, rally that focused not only on complaining, but on suggesting solutions to California’s budget.”
Complaining, yes, because most college students find themselves working two jobs or taking out thousands of dollars in student loans to keep up with the rising costs of tuition. The Express sent out Vincent Fernandez, one of our hard-working photojournalists, to cover the action during both protests; he came back to the newsroom with some amazing photographs, showing young children holding signs that said “Save my education,” as well as capturing active City College students protesting amid thousands of others. But we also know that the other big event for most of us this month is spring break. So, the Express has chosen to run stories scattered throughout our newspaper exploring the reality of spring break for most college students because we can’t stay stressed out due to higher tuition fees. A spring break logo will be stamped next to all stories pertaining to the week-long college holiday.

Spring break: A week where we can catch up on sleep, work extra hours and hopefully get some vitamin D in our bodies from the sunshine. For the majority of college students, spring break is not a time where Daddy pays for you and your best bros to fly off to a world of make-believe at the MTV Jersey Shore house.
Most students are on a tight cash budget nowadays because of the high cost of a college education, so many will be staying in town. We sympathize with all students staying close to home, so the news section is offering a spring break alternatives story for those of you staying behind this year. Some students are traveling during the break, but they’re mostly visiting potential future colleges, as opposed to visiting raging keggers on sandy beaches.
So although a current college education is costing us more than ever, we are all in the same position and we can try to feel a little better about this messed up situation. Let’s just hope the govenator can no longer ignore us by the thousands.
