After a slow start to the season, hope and promise blossomed with the Panthers’ 7-2 victory over the Diablo Canyon Vikings on March 13.
City College improved to an overall record of 9-8, finally reaching the potential the Panthers showed in their loss to the Chabot College Gladiators in the home-opener series back on Feb. 13.
“We got off to a slow start and starting to play pretty well,” Panthers coach Andy McKay said.
Panthers starting pitcher Aaron Appino set the tone for this game by striking out the first two batters. He was able to get the third batter to ground out.
In the bottom of the first , Panther Brian Stamps singled to left field and was a menace to the Vikings’ starting pitcher while on first base, threatening to steal second base. With one out, Eli Hynes was awarded first after being beaned by the pitcher.
With Trent Fuller up to bat in the four spot, Stamps managed to steal third base. Fuller was able to send Stamps home on a sacrifice fly ball to the Vikings’ outfielder in deep right field. The inning came to an end with the third out, but City College had earned the first run of the game and led the Vikings 1-0.
In the second and third innings, the Vikings and Panthers both went three up and three down.
In the fourth inning, Viking Eric Andrews was able to score on the triple by Mitch Petrak. Petrak was then able to score as a result of a sacrifice fly by Josh Nuyten. Those were the only two runs the Vikings were able to get across the plate in the game, as the rest of the matchup was all Panthers.

In the sixth inning, the Panthers’ starting pitcher sat the Vikings’ batters down in order. With one out, Panther Brian Stamps made it to first. Stamps then stole second and third base, made it home for the sixth run for the Panthers.
The seventh inning still brought no luck to the Vikings, as they again were out in consecutive order. It was a different story for the Panthers, as they continued to get hits with their hot bats. The Panthers’ second batter ,Thomas Dixon, got a base hit to left field. Dixon then stole second on ball 2 for the next batter. Brooke Brookes was able to hit a double to left field to tack on another run for the Panthers, their seventh of the game.
After Viking Justin Manci struck out in the top of the eighth inning, Vikings‘ coaches came out of the dugout to argue calls at home plate. Nothing came of this and play was resumed.
In the ninth inning, the Panthers were able to close out the game without allowing any more runs with stellar pitching performances by Aaron Appino and reliever Cole Brocker. The Panthers won with the final score 7-2.
“It was team effort,” Panther catcher Lucas Kephart said. “Everyone’s contributing and everyone is doing well.”
En route to victory, the Panthers earned 11 hits, while the Diablo Vikings only had four.
“We beat a quality opponent and feel good about it,” Panthers coach Andy McKay said.
