Panthers’ route Mustangs following loss to Fresno City College
The City College football team has been trading wins and losses over the past four games. With their latest win putting the team at 4–4, the Panthers now believe they’ve found what it takes to get over .500 to finish the season.
The Panthers were able to get things going both offensively and defensively, defeating San Joaquin Delta 31–6 Oct. 27. They were without National Valley Conference sack-leader Alema Taamu who’s out due to a shoulder injury. Despite being without their key defender, City College allowed only 6 points, which is a season best.
Quarterback Jayden Machado completed 17 passes, throwing for 313 yards and three touchdowns. Machado has now thrown three touchdowns in three consecutive games and five overall this season.
“I think it went pretty well for the most part,” Machado said. “The defense did a great job of forcing three and outs, and on offense, once we found our rhythm, we took off from there.”
Machado said he was most impressed by how fundamentally sound the team played. “We truly were doing our job—especially the defense—those guys were amazing.”
He also said once the team cleaned up on mistakes that occurred in the first half, it was able to function as one with every player on the same page.
The Panthers defense forced three turnovers, intercepted two passes from separate Mustang quarterbacks and recovered a fumble. The offense racked up 503 total yards over the 0–8 Mustangs, going over 500 yards for the second time this season.
The Panthers went up 7–0 when Machado connected with Jonas McMillian for a 55-yard score. Machado’s second passing score of the game came when he threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to leading receiver Ruben Lee, who caught six passes for 90 yards. With less 10 minutes remaining in the game Machado threw his second longest touchdown pass of the season with a 69-yard pass to Roy Sanders.
“We just have to build off this win,” Machado said. “Guys are starting to see that when all 11 players do their job and doing it well, we have a chance to win.”

In the game against National Valley Conference leader Fresno City College Oct. 20, the Panthers fell to the Rams 27–23.
The Panthers cut the deficit to 4 points late in the fourth quarter when Asa Wondeh caught a 56-yard touchdown.
“We just started slow with a rough first half, and we allowed them to put up too many points. We had a really strong fourth quarter and posed a comeback but just couldn’t get a stop and weren’t able to get the ball back,” Machado said.
Machado had a season high in passing yards (435), pass completions/attempts (30 for 45), and completion percentage at 66.7.
Unfortunately for Machado, he also had a season high in turnovers with three interceptions. Machado said the interceptions were mental mistakes and miscommunication between him and Wondeh.
“He and I had a few rough plays and it ended up being detrimental and killed us,” he said.
Despite some of the rough play, Wondeh finished the game with eight catches, 198 yards, and three touchdowns.
In the game against Modesto (2–1 in the conference, 5–3 overall), the Panthers (2–1, 4–4) will be seeking their first win of the season against a team with a winning record. City College will play its season finale at home Nov. 10 against College of the Sequoias.
