The holidays should be the time of year when students and faculty alike should be gleeful and glad for a year that is about to come to an end. But with so many depressing events revolving around students, such as cut class funding, the Associated Student Government debacles, lack of H1N1 vaccinations on campus, and limited university transfers, it’s almost impossible to feel or express holiday joy. But even though there may be many negative things floating around, people should realize that this time can be characterized by what Charles Dickens said in his novel “A Tale of Two Cities,” “It was the best of times and the worst of times.”

So there’s always something positive along side the negatives, wrapped together in a neat little package.

Sure, cut classes make it tougher for students who want to finish their general education and transfer. And the fee hikes in the CSU and UC system don’t make that any easier. But what we often forget is that, though our fees were raised from $20 to $26 per unit, compared to community colleges in other states, where fees can get as high as $300 per unit, we’re still doing pretty well. Students are still coming to school and persevering in trying to finish their academic goals.
