On a 92-degree day, the air conditioning unit in the City College wrestling gym is on the fritz. It’s a quarter after 3 in the afternoon as wrestlers and the sound of hip-hop music fill the mats. The room becomes a hot, muggy sauna.
Coach Walter Ulrich barks out instructions to the athletes to use proper technique. He takes a break from a serious authoritarian role to joke about the music blasting in the background.
“What’s that? Sounds like love-making music. Put on some old school rock or metal,” exclaimed Ulrich.
The wrestling team is preparing for its upcoming alumni match Sept. 4, but most importantly, the wrestlers are getting ready to defend their Big 8 Conference title as the season approaches.
The first match is the KLS Air Express Invitational Tournament Sept. 19 at City College. Although the first tournament is weeks away, coaches say the alumni match offers a nice break for the wrestlers.
“They can’t wait. It’s a chance for the guys to wrestle someone else,” said Ulrich.
City College has won the conference title four years in a row, and Coach David Pacheco said this season’s roster could play a role in winning their fifth.

“Some of the younger guys we have might be older than the older guys on the team,” said Pacheco.
According to Pacheco, the wrestling team took a blow to its roster this past spring, when six projected starters decided they wouldn’t be returning in the fall.
Despite the huge loss, the team still has set its sights on a fifth consecutive conference title, with the ultimate goal of winning a state championship. To do so, the Panthers will have to get past a Northern California team that constantly ranks among the best of the state.
“Fresno has been the powerhouse in Northern California. They’re always right there,” said Pacheco. “We have a match with them early in the season, so we’ll get an idea of where we are and where we stand.”
There’s always pressure on the sophomores to do better than the season before, according to Ulrich, but the coaching staff is hoping to keep the team loose before the season officially begins.
“It’s like taking a test. If you worry about it too much before you take it, you’re going to fail,” said Pacheco.
