Drake says now that her daughter is going to day care, Jaliyah gets tired faster and at the end of the day it is easier to put her to sleep.

After class, Drake goes to track practice, where she usually practices for two hours. In addition to track, Drake also takes several other fitness courses, including a boot camp class.

Following practice, there’s no time to relax. Instead, Drake returns home and begins her night routine.

What is hard, she says, is balancing multiple roles and doing things to the best of her ability.

“If I put more into parenting or more into school, then I wouldn’t be a good athlete, so it’s hard to manage,” Drake says.

At the end of December last year Drake was faced with another challenge after she lost her job. But instead of letting it get her down, she says she felt as though the situation actually benefited her.

“Since I lost my job, my grades have been much better,” says Drake.

Now, Drake says she wants to better her athletic abilities; specifically, she wants to improve as a thrower and hopes to transfer to UC Berkeley, UC Davis or San Francisco State University.

As she continues to prepare for her future, the time Drake spends with Jaliyah will always be cherished.

“I love watching my child grow,” says Drake. “Parenting is easy because my daughter is a really good kid.”
