The SCC Foundation’s scholarship program is currently available and applications for awards ranging from $500 to $6,000 can be filled out online through March 2.

To qualify for a scholarship, students must have completed at least 12 units of classes at City College by fall 2011 and be currently enrolled in at least six units.  Eligibility is not based on financial need.  Applications must be submitted no later than 4 p.m. on the final day.

According to Marcia Ortiz, administrative assistant with the City College Scholarship Foundation, students will need two letters of recommendation submitted on their behalf, one being from a City College faculty member.  Some applications may ask for additional materials.

Ortiz said that “a lot of students are confused” because wait listed classes or classes taken on other campuses do not count toward the units needed for eligibility.

The awards will be disbursed in May and can be used for education-related expenses, including future semesters at City College or at another campus, Ortiz said.

Chris Iwata, Humanities and Fine Arts Division Dean, has been a member of the Recognition Events Committee for the past 15 years. Students who have good grades and declared majors have a good chance of getting selected, Iwata said.

Amanda Tomkins, a third-semester student at City College, hadn’t heard about the program until recently. According to Iwata, on occasion, money has been left over from the approximate 200 scholarships available in the past because not enough students apply.

“It wouldn’t hurt [to apply],” Iwata said. “You never know what you can get.”
