This season City College golf has claimed three victories out of the five Big 8 Conference matches competed in since Sept. 15, but the Panthers have a lot to live up to since three athletes received scholarships to attend universities last season.
“We have a tradition of winning here at City College to uphold,” women’s golf head coach Tim Kiernan said.
The ability to win in college sports and the attention it brings to potential recruiters has garnered scholarships for last year’s City College women’s golf team starters Kayla Reide, Michelle Bello, and Elise Van Deusen to colleges such as University of Tulsa, Western Carolina University and California State University Monterey.
“Our expectations for the team are the same every season,” said Kiernan. “Win the Big 8 Conference, win Nor Cal, and win the State Championship,” he said.
Kiernan said he believes that this year’s starters Riley Sexton, Wilma Estafante, and team captain Liz Thomas are capable of stepping into the rather large shoes left to fill by the 2009 Big 8 Conference, Northern California, and California State champions.
Last year, the women’s golf team went undefeated in the Big 8 Conference with an 84-0 record and an overall record of 116-3 to finish third in the state championships.
Kiernan said he believes that his current athletes have the ability to deal with the pressure and expectations of winning consistently, because of the hard academic work ethic and physical training that is required of the players before they are recruited.
Assistant coach Mark Areson has also been an asset in recruiting high-quality athletes to the women’s golf team, Kiernan said. Areson and Kiernan work in tandem to bring in competitive athletes, such as communications major Liz Thomas, 19.

Thomas helped coordinate the coaches’ workouts over the summer, “When were practicing we’re there to work and work hard,” Thomas said.
This season the team works weekly with outside performance coaches at Results Performance Center in Rancho Murieta to strengthen and condition themselves to push through the extensive hours of golfing that the team does.
The Results Performance Center staff also works directly with Olympic athletes to help develop muscle strength and endurance capabilities to allow athletes to perform at an even higher level.
Thomas said she believes that her cardio has been directly improved as a result of working at the Results Performance Center.
“Golf is a tiring sport,” Thomas said. “But if you look at our back nine scores compared to other school’s scores, you will see we have better scores because of better conditioning.”
Thomas also said she feels that the help she receives from new assistant coach Rhonda Moore is vital to getting to her personal goals of shooting consistently in the 70’s this season, and the team’s goals of making it back to the state tournament.
This year, the golf team is a younger group of competitors than last year’s, but Kiernan said he believes that if the team works hard and stays on the program it will have no toruble bringing a state championship to City College.
The women’s golf team will compete again Thursday Sept. 29 for the Suttertown Classic noon at Bing Maloney golf course in Sacramento.
