Basketball is a breathtaking sport that takes enormous determination, concentration and team-work.
The men’s basketball team started its regular season Nov. 5 at the John Wallace Tournament held at Cabrillo College in Ohlone, Calif., beating Chabot College 46-43.
City College’s men’s basketball team has been hard at work and gearing
up for this season. With the season beginning, the team is excited about the new challenges that await them in their quest for the playoffs.
“Last year we finished quite strong,” says basketball head coach Andrew Jones. “We beat several teams that went to playoffs.”
According to Jones, the team has came together as a whole and ended last season better than expected.
“We finished fifth in league,” Jones says. “We won four out of six games. We really became a team during the first half of the league and improved a great deal.”
Within the last year, a few players have been injured, new players were recruited and former players returned, adding more challenges for the team.

“We’re just trying to come together as a team right now, and we’re doing pretty good with that,” says shooting guard Anthony Lennear. “We don’t challenge each other enough like we do in games.”
Although the team is going in to this season with confidence, it knows there is still plenty to work on.“Our biggest problem is rebounding,”Jones says. “We’ve got two true post players, but the team’s going to have to rebound, not just rely on the others to do it.”
Although they hope to play solid defense, team members believe thattheir greatest strength will be their offensive attack.
“We have a lot of shooters,” says Lennear. “And we have some pretty good defenders as well. But shooting
is our thing. That’s our strongest point.”
Jones says that the team’s offense and sophomore returners are a big factor to winning future games, due to their previous experience on the court.
“We’re very versatile. We have a lot of people who are capable at the offensive end,” says Jones. “I think that’s our biggest strength.”
The team hopes to build around this strength to lead them to success says Jones. For the upcoming season, they hope to win and make it to the post season.
“We want to go to playoffs,” says Jones. “We haven’t been there in a few years, and this team has the potential to get there. We’re not a one-dimensional team; we’re going to be a spread-the-wealth kind of team.”
