City College Panthers defeated Shasta College 44-5 in a dual meet on Wednesday, Oct. 25. The victory was highlighted by pin falls from Ahmmaad Lewis and Evan Glines, and technical victories by Jacob Hodge and Ammar Khan, according to the team page on the Panthers site.
The Panthers won eight of the 10 contested matches and are now 2-0 in the 2023 through 2024 West Division standings, according to the California Community College Athletic Association, where various California community colleges play in their respective sport and are broken down by location.
After the event, Panthers’ head coach Marquis Gales explained the pride he felt for his team. “I do feel that our guys did well, great to see guys come on top against a tough school like Shasta which is a very good school with tough big guys to compete,” Gales said.
The dual opened up with City College’s Jacob Hodge winning his match in the 133-pound weight class and Panthers’ Marco Firmacion taking home a win in the 141-pound weight class.
Then came the 149-pound weight classman Ahmaad Lewis, who won his match for City College as well. “I do feel I did pretty well tonight, I executed very well on everything and I was able to secure a very quick pin fall,” 18-year-old biology major Lewis said.
Ammar Khan came next and wrestled in the 157-pound weight class and also picked up a victory. “I think I did great,” said 18-year-old business major Khan, “I was able to clean up my past mental and physical errors from my past matches. Making those improvements did help me secure a win tonight and make my team and coach happy.”
Luke Harrison and Andres Rodriguez came next, winning both their rounds by forfeit. Finally, Erick Dutka in the 197-pound class and 285-pound class member Evan Glines won the last two matches for City College.
The wrestling team would then move on from the night’s victory to compete in the Simpson Duals in Redding on Saturday Oct. 28. On the topic of the dual, coach Gales stated, “I do feel we will do well Saturday, it will be tough competition but will be ready for it from what I saw today.”
The Panthers moved on from the night’s victory to compete in the duals, where they went 2-2 in dual competition and placed sixth in Pool A, and fourth in Pool B, according to Track Wrestling.
The Panthers are currently sitting at 3-1 in their division conference, while also sitting at 5-2 overall throughout the Big 8 North division for wrestling duals, according to California Community College Athletic Association.
