City College cross-country season ends at Nor-Cal
Women’s Cross County
The City College women’s cross-country team had seven runners qualify for California State Cross-Country Championships, but the team never made it to Fresno, CA. to run the course at Woodward Park.
Due to the Butte County Camp Fire, sophomore runner Dariya Greene said they made a team decision not to attend the state meet Nov. 17 due to the poor air conditions. “All of us were affected by the smoke,” said Greene. .
City College took seventh place after a rough day of running at the in the NorCal championships at Shasta College Nov. 17, where the City College women’s cross-country team had to deal with not only a tough course but also the hot weather.
“We’re a little beat up,” said Head Coach Marisa Avendano. “The girls ran so hard because they really wanted to make it to the state meet.
Greene noted the challenges of that meet, including and how the hot weather played a factor on the course.

“We practiced at 7 in the morning the two weeks prior, and she (coach Avendano) would have us do afternoon runs, but even then, it didn’t prepare us for the heat,” said Greene.
Greene (whose personal record of 20:37 this season) had run the Woodland course in Fresno before—she would’ve been joined by sophomore runner Miranda Raynor (22:49), along with freshmen runners Maritza Tellez (19:28), Lauren Smith (20:37), Natalie Estrada (21:10), Arlette Montero (25:18) and Robanjeet Singh (26:49).
Greene said she and some of her teammates were hoping to set new personal records because the Fresno course is primarily flat.
“It was pretty fast-paced, so that’s always good,” said Greene. “I like hills, but I also like flat courses. Maybe for the first mile it was a battle, but after that everyone just settled into their paces, and it was kind of just like that through the whole way until the end.”
Men’s Cross County
Head coach Jang-Ha Oh and the men’s cross-country season came to an end at the Norcal Championships. Noah Spickelmier (23:49.05) was the first Panther runner to finish, coming in 64th place. City College had its best finish of the season in the Big 8 preview Sept. 14, taking fifth place at Diablo Valley College.
