As the fall semester begins, the football season is also underway. Although the City College football team consist of mostly new athletes, it is still working toward winning the Mid-Empire Conference.
“The team has a lot of athletes with potential. We just need to stay focused and learn the game,” said freshman defensive end Ethan Westbrooks. “The team is doing a good job at pushing each other.”
After finishing last season with a 6-4 overall record, a 3-1 conference record, and a trip to the bowl game, the team is hoping for another positive season, head coach Dannie Walker said.
While the team is preparing for the season, Hughes Stadium has been undergoing a major renovation. While the construction left the team without full access to its facilities.
“There wasn’t a negative affect from the construction. We still had access to the south part of the field, and we were able to get rooms to watch film when we needed to,” Walker said. “While the team is set on the season ahead, there is still a lot of work to do.”

“There are lots of young players, but they are doing a good job of stepping up,” Walker said.
The knowledge of football is not all that Walker is passing down to the young athletes.
“We are really trying to stress the importance of being a championship person. If you stay positive, the success will come,” Walker said.
The Panthers gear up again Saturday Oct. 1 against Fresno City College 6 p.m. at Hughes Stadium.
